Colin Campbell of Lochow, an ancestor of the Campbells of Argyll, was knighted around 1280. The subsequent chiefs became Earls of Argyll until 1701 when William of Orange conferred a Dukedom to the 10th Earl. The 9th Earl was executed in 1685 for his involvement in the Monmouth Rebellion. The Campbells played a significant role in state affairs, holding important posts such as the Lord Justice General's heir and Admiral for the Western Coasts and Isles of Scotland.
