Trews Outfits
Tartan trews and complete trews outfits, cut close through the leg and traditionally on the bias so the sett runs diagonally. Trews are older than the modern kilt and count as formal Highland dress in their own right rather than as a substitute. No sporran, no hose and no flashes, since trews have pockets and cover the leg. Worn with the same jackets as a kilt and ordinary shoes. Trews are traditionally cut on the bias, meaning the cloth is cut at forty five degrees to the weave so the sett runs diagonally down the leg. That diagonal is the mark of genuine trews and it is why they hang differently from tartan trousers cut on the straight grain. Send waist, hip, inseam and outseam, taking the inseam from the crotch to the top of the shoe heel rather than to the floor.
