Plain Ties
Plain ties, narrow ties and bow ties in solid colours, cut to sit correctly with a kilt jacket and waistcoat rather than with a suit. If your kilt, waistcoat or fly plaid already carries the sett, a plain tie in one colour pulled from it gives the outfit somewhere to rest. It is also the more useful purchase, since it works with an ordinary suit as readily as with Highland dress. Pull the colour from the sett rather than contrasting against it, and take a quieter tone rather than the loudest stripe. Standard width around three inches suits most kilt jackets. Learn to tie a bow rather than buying pre-tied, since a hand tied bow sits slightly imperfectly and that imperfection is exactly what makes it look right. For a wedding party, agree one tie colour across the group before anyone orders.
