Horse Hair Sporrans
Horse hair sporrans are the most formal and the most visible sporran in Highland dress, which is why pipe bands wear them. Long hair hanging from a shaped metal cantle, usually with tassels, on a genuine leather body. They move when the wearer moves, which is precisely the point on a marching line. Outside a band they belong to formal evening wear only. Available in white, black and mixed hair, with chain and belt strap. Hair length varies and it changes the effect considerably. Longer hair swings further and reads more strongly at parade distance, which is why bands specify it. Shorter hair is more manageable and less prone to tangling. White is the most traditional on parade and reads strongest against dark setts. Black gives a heavier, more restrained line. Mixed hair sits between the two. If buying for a band, confirm colour and cantle finish before ordering.
