Chore Coats
Chore coats take their pattern from French workwear, meaning a boxy body, three or four patch pockets, a flat collar and a straight hem. Ours come in tartan and heavy cotton, cut roomy enough to layer over a knit. It is the most useful jacket most people own, because it works over a tee in spring, over a jumper in autumn and under a coat in winter. Cut to your own chest, shoulder and body length. The chore coat began as French railway and farm workwear, and every feature on it was practical. The patch pockets held tools. The boxy body allowed movement. The flat collar sat comfortably under a heavier coat. It sits between a shirt jacket and a proper coat in both weight and formality, which is why it covers more ground in a wardrobe than either.
