How to Wear Kilt Flashes

What flashes are, the tradition behind them, and how to wear them.

If you've recently acquired a kilt and are pondering the inclusion of Flashes, you're in the right place. The tradition of Kilt Flashes dates back to the Feileadh Mor (the Great Kilt), when men wore socks with their kilts for warmth and secured a yard of tartan ribbon around their socks just below the knee. The ribbon's ends would dangle, creating a distinctive look. Today's Flashes emulate this original style.

There is even an old folklore that Flashes once indicated marital status — visible Flashes signifying availability, concealed Flashes a relationship.

Kilt Flashes are two strips of fabric with a small V cut from the bottom, attached to elastic garters and worn in pairs, one per leg. They keep socks firmly in place, even amidst the most vigorous ceilidh dancing. Kilt socks are longer so they can fold down over the elastic, creating a neat cuff of about 3 inches.

Flashes can be a solid colour that complements the kilt's tartan, a matching tartan, or a deliberately contrasting colour — personal preference prevails. Explore our Solid Colour Kilt Flashes or Tartan Kilt Flashes today.
