How to Tie Ghillie Brogues
The traditional cross-lacing, step by step.
To ensure a perfect fit and traditional appearance for your Ghillie Brogues, follow these steps:
- Place your shoe on your foot, tightening the laces to a comfortable yet secure fit.
- Hold the ends of the laces firmly, then make a single twist to keep them from loosening.
- Keeping your grip, pull the laces tight so the twist remains intact.
- Cross the laces over to the opposite hand, changing their sides.
- Twist the laces together four to six times, creating a tensioned section about 1–2 inches (3–5 cm) long.
- Take the laces around the back of your leg, crossing them to secure the twisted portion.
- Bring the laces back to the front and tie a standard knot, then a double knot so they stay tied all day.
Tips:
- Keep the laces flat against your shoes and legs for comfort and a polished look.
- Balance the lace ends so they hang evenly; trim if necessary, but not too short.
Practice the technique a few times to achieve the perfect tension and appearance.
Step out in tradition.
