Anything fitted is cut to your own measurements, since a sett makes every fit compromise visible in a way plain cloth does not. Skirts are the easiest place to start, because whatever you wear above breaks the pattern and you control how much tartan is showing. A skirt is the sensible first tartan garment, since the sett is broken by whatever you wear on top and you control how much pattern shows. Weathered and ancient colourways are muted and pass as a soft check almost anywhere. The costume effect comes from repetition rather than from tartan itself, so one piece with everything else solid is what keeps an outfit reading as clothing.
