MacGregor Clan Origins & History
At Scottish Kilt, we are proud to present the MacGregor Tartan — a fierce emblem of Highland resistance, ancient royalty, and enduring Scottish spirit. Steeped in dramatic history and legendary defiance, the MacGregor name is one of the most iconic in Scottish heritage. Wearing this tartan is not just a nod to heritage — it’s a declaration of resilience, courage, and a noble bloodline.
The Legendary Origins of the MacGregor Clan
The roots of Clan MacGregor trace back to the 9th century, with claims of royal descent from Griogar, a possible son (or brother) of Kenneth MacAlpin, the first King of the Scots. This regal lineage is reflected in the clan’s powerful motto — “’S Rioghal Mo Dhream” (Royal is My Race).
Other historical theories connect the MacGregors to the hereditary abbots of Glendochart or to Griogair, son of Dungal, a 9th-century co-ruler of Alba. Whichever truth you follow, the MacGregors have long been viewed as one of Scotland’s oldest and proudest clans, with a legacy etched into the Highlands.
Where the MacGregor Name Comes From
The surname MacGregor comes from the Gaelic Mac Griogair, meaning “son of Gregor”. The name Gregor itself is a Gaelic form of Gregory, which gained popularity in the British Isles through Pope Gregory the Great, known for his influence in Christianizing the Anglo-Saxons. The name carries prestige, piety, and power — all qualities the MacGregors have embodied for centuries.
A Clan Marked by Struggle and Survival
Once powerful landowners across Glenorchy, Glenlochy, and Glenstrae, the MacGregors saw their fortunes shift when Robert the Bruce redistributed their lands to the loyal Clan Campbell in the 14th century. The MacGregors were confined to Glenstrae, and centuries of bitter conflict and injustice followed.
The Battle of Glen Fruin in 1603, where the MacGregors defeated the Colquhouns, led to King James VI outlawing the clan name itself — a rare and severe punishment in Scottish history. For over 170 years, MacGregors were forbidden from using their name, forced into exile or alias, and became known as the “Children of the Mist.”
Rob Roy MacGregor: Highland Hero
Perhaps the most famous MacGregor is Rob Roy, the legendary Highland outlaw, cattleman, and folk hero born in 1671 in Glengyle near Stirling. Sometimes compared to Robin Hood, Rob Roy fought in the Jacobite uprisings, endured betrayal and imprisonment, and defied the British crown — all while remaining a symbol of Highland tenacity.
His red-and-black tartan became iconic, and tales of his bravery continue to inspire. Even Bonnie Prince Charlie was painted wearing this distinctive tartan, strengthening the clan’s connection to Scotland’s romantic rebellion.
MacGregor Castles & Strongholds
-
Lanrick Castle served as the official clan seat for over a century. Though tragically demolished in 2002 after a fire and legal battles, its grounds still preserve the MacGregor Monument — a stone tree trunk topped with Roman Doric columns, marking the family’s lasting presence.
-
Glen Orchy and Loch Katrine, though not home to castles today, remain symbolic territories where the MacGregors once thrived.
Visitors can explore the Clan Gregor Museum at Castle Menzies, which hosts artifacts, stories, and history of the MacGregor line.
