Most Scottish surnames aren't clan names — they're septs.

A sept is a family or surname that historically attached itself to a larger Scottish clan for protection. Septs are not branches of the clan by blood — they were accepted into the clan's protection and rights. A Burns is a sept of Campbell; a Henderson is a sept of Mackintosh or MacKenzie depending on region; a Black can be a sept of Lamont, MacGregor, or Maclean. Septs wear the parent clan's tartan.

Most Scottish surnames are septs rather than clan names. Only about 200 surnames are clan names in their own right — the other thousands of Scottish surnames are septs of those clans, regional variants, or anglicisations. If your surname isn't a clan name itself, it almost certainly maps to one as a sept.

You wear the parent clan's tartan. Septs don't have their own tartans — they share the parent clan's. If you're a Burns, you wear Campbell tartan. If you're a Henderson, you wear Mackintosh or MacKenzie tartan. This is the longstanding tradition recognised by the Lord Lyon King of Arms.

Some surnames are claimed by multiple clans — usually because the surname existed in different regions independently. Henderson is a sept of both Mackintosh (Highland) and MacKenzie (Ross-shire). Black is a sept of Lamont, MacGregor, and Maclean in different traditions. If your family has a strong oral history pointing to one region, that overrides the general database.
