The clan first appeared in historical records in the 15th century, and by this time, they had become notorious as Border reivers, raiding and defending the lands of Liddesdale. The Elliots were famed for their guerrilla warfare tactics and cattle rustling, sharing the region with the Armstrongs. Their motto, "Fortiter et recte" (With strength and right), reflects their fierce and resilient nature. The clan played significant roles in the Wars of Scottish Independence and fought at the Battle of Flodden in 1513. By the 16th century, the Elliots were deeply involved in the lawless reiver culture, often crossing into England for raids.
