How to Measure for Blinds

Measure accurately for tartan Roman blinds — inside or outside the recess.

Transform your room with Tartan Roman Blinds. Decide whether your blinds will sit inside or outside the window recess before measuring. Always use a metal tape measure — cloth or plastic tapes may stretch. Record full centimetres, rounding down; if measuring in inches, measure to the nearest quarter inch and round down.

Note that blinds wider than 150 cm / 59 inches will have visible seams, perfectly matched to the stripe in your chosen tartan.

Inside a Window Recess

  • Measure the recess length, top to bottom.
  • Measure the width at the top, where the blind will be installed.
  • Take width measurements at the middle and bottom of the recess too.
  • Record the lowest width measurement to prevent sagging when the blind is lowered.

Outside a Window Recess

  • Measure the length from your chosen position above the window to the desired finished length.
  • For width: measure the architrave at its widest point, or the window sill if applicable.
  • With no architrave, measure the opening at its widest point and add 12 cm for a 6 cm overlap each side.

Bay Windows

  • Determine blind depth, allowing 6 cm for brackets and the mechanism.
  • Mark the blind depth at the bay angles, and measure between the marked points for each blind width.
  • Start by measuring the central blind, and allow space for smooth operation.

Dress your windows in tartan.
