Frequently asked questions
A skirt cut narrow at the waist and widening steadily to the hem, forming the shape of a capital A. It has no gathering and no pleating, so the widening comes entirely from the cut of the panels. That gives a clean, flat line over the hip and a gentle flare rather than volume.
Degree of flare. An A-line widens gradually and hangs close to the body. A skater skirt flares into a full or half circle and swings freely. A-line reads more restrained and works in an office. Skater reads more playful. Both are fitted at the waist and forgiving over the hip.
For the widest range of shapes, yes. It is fitted where most people want definition and loose where most people do not, and it avoids the horizontal emphasis at the hip that a straight cut creates in a checked cloth. If you are buying tartan for the first time and unsure, this is the safe cut.
Knee length is the most adaptable and suits nearly everything. Midi flatters taller frames and works with a heel. Above the knee reads younger and pairs with flats. Send your waist and the exact finished length you want, since an A-line hem sits differently depending on where the flare has reached.
In a muted sett, yes, and it is one of the most workplace-appropriate cuts in the range. Knee length in a weathered or grey based tartan with a plain top reads as ordinary business dress. Bright modern colourways are a different matter. See pencil plaid skirts for something sharper.
It helps, since a lining stops the cloth clinging to tights and keeps the flare hanging cleanly. Check the product page for which styles include one. If yours is unlined and clings in winter, a slip solves it and is easier than trying to treat the cloth.
