The next chiefs were Earls of Argyll before 1701 when William of Orange conferred a Dukedom to the 10th Earl. He was executed in 1685 for his participation in the Monmouth Rebellion. The Campbells were prominently involved in state affairs and held high posts which included Hereditary Lord Justice General as well as Admiral of Western Coasts and Isles of Scotland.
