Tartan Plaid Skirts & Kilts

Every plaid and tartan skirt we make, in one place. Mini, midi, knee length and full length, in A line, pleated, pencil, wrap and skater cuts. Choose your sett at checkout from over 5000 clan, district and fashion tartans, and if your family tartan is not listed, send us the name and we will source it. Each skirt is cut to your own waist and finished length rather than sized off a rail, which is the difference between a skirt you wear once and one you keep. If you are not sure which length suits you, our team can talk it through. Decide the length before the sett, because length decides what the skirt can do and the tartan only decides how loud it is. Mini and above the knee read youngest and suit flat shoes. Knee length is the only length correct in an office, at a wedding and at dinner without adjustment. Midi flatters the widest range of heights provided the hem clears the calf muscle. Full length wants a defined waist and a little heel.

About this collection

Tartan and Plaid Skirts

A tartan skirt is one of very few patterned garments that does not date, which is why it keeps returning to collections decade after decade without ever really leaving. The sett does the work, so the rest of the outfit can stay plain, and a single skirt will carry from an office to a dinner depending only on what you put with it.

Choose the length first and the sett second, because length decides what the skirt can do and the tartan only decides how loud it is. Mini and above the knee read youngest and suit flat shoes. Knee length is the most adaptable. Midi flatters the widest range of heights. Full length wants a defined waist and a little heel.

Then choose the cut. Pleated reads traditional and sharp, A line is the most forgiving, pencil is the most formal, skater is the most relaxed, and wrap adjusts at the waist. For the same cuts in hide, see leather skirts. Finish with a tartan scarf in the same sett only if the top half is plain, or the two patterns will fight.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Not quite. Tartan is the Scottish term for a specific woven pattern, called a sett, in which the same sequence of coloured stripes repeats in both directions. Plaid is the American word for that same criss cross look, and it also covers checks with no Scottish origin at all. Every tartan is a plaid. Not every plaid is a tartan. Everything on this page uses a genuine named sett.

A kilt wraps around the body, fastens at one side with leather straps and buckles, and carries deep knife pleats through the back. A tartan skirt borrows the cloth but not the construction, so it can be A line, pencil, pleated or wrapped, and it usually closes with a zip. If you want the traditional silhouette, go to tartan kilts. If you want tartan in a modern cut, you are on the right page.

Yes, and most of our customers do. Clan tartans carry family meaning for the people who claim them, but nobody polices who wears what and there is no rule barring anyone from a sett. If you would rather sidestep the question entirely, choose a district tartan, a fashion sett, or one of the universal designs that belongs to no single family. Wear the one you like the look of.

Let the skirt talk and keep the rest quiet. A plain knit in one of the darker colours pulled from the sett is the easiest win, finished with boots or loafers. For evening, swap in a fitted black top and heeled ankle boots. A waistcoat over a shirt reads smart without competing. Keep tights in a solid tone rather than a pattern, or the whole thing gets busy fast.

Judge by where the hem lands, not by the label. A hem finishing at the narrowest part of the calf, roughly 24 to 28 inches from the waist on most people, flatters the widest range of heights. Above the knee lengthens the leg and suits flat shoes. Full length works best with a defined waist and a little heel. Shop straight by length in midi or long if you already know.

Premium acrylic, woven to the sett rather than printed onto the surface. Acrylic holds a pleat sharply, keeps its colour through repeated wear, and does not itch the way heavier traditional cloth can. It is also lighter, which matters if you are wearing tartan somewhere warm. Because the pattern is in the weave, the reverse of the cloth shows the same design as the face.

Start in the tartan finder, which searches by surname, region and colour across more than five thousand setts. If your name returns nothing, the sept name lookup catches families historically attached to a larger clan. If no clan applies at all, universal and district tartans are open to anyone.

Yes. Design it in the free tartan designer, which takes colours and thread counts and renders the cloth live, then we register and weave it. Custom weaving starts at ten yards, which is far more than a single skirt needs, so this suits families, weddings and groups rather than one garment.

Cool hand wash or a gentle machine cycle, inside out, then hang to dry rather than tumbling. Press pleats individually on a cool setting through a cloth, working down each fold rather than across. Most tartan skirts need airing far more often than washing, which is easier on the cloth.

A kilted skirt keeps kilt construction, meaning a wrap front with a flat apron, leather straps and buckles, and pleats only across the back. A tartan skirt uses the same cloth in any cut and usually closes with a zip. Kilted reads traditional. Tartan skirt covers everything else.
