The family is also notable for its early adoption of Quakerism, beginning with Colonel David Barclay in the 17th century. His son, Robert Barclay, became a renowned Quaker leader, earning royal favor despite the persecution of Quakers, and transformed the lands of Urie into a free barony under King Charles II in 1679. Internationally, the clan's influence extended to Livonia (modern-day Latvia and Estonia), with Field Marshal Michael Andreas Barclay de Tolly rising to prominence in Russia.
