Historical Significance
Clan Barclay traces its origins to the Norman conquest, where the name began as "de Berchelai" in France before evolving into "Barclay" in Scotland by the 14th century. The Barclays settled in Aberdeenshire, becoming influential in Scottish politics. Sir David Barclay, a prominent figure, served as an advisor to Robert the Bruce and was captured during the Battle of Methven. The family is also notable for its early adoption of Quakerism, beginning with Colonel David Barclay in the 17th century. His son, Robert Barclay, became a renowned Quaker leader, earning royal favor despite the persecution of Quakers, and transformed the lands of Urie into a free barony under King Charles II in 1679. Internationally, the clan's influence extended to Livonia (modern-day Latvia and Estonia), with Field Marshal Michael Andreas Barclay de Tolly rising to prominence in Russia. The clan’s motto, "Aut augere aut mori" (Either Action or Death), reflects their enduring legacy.
