The Stewart Hunting Ancient Tartan originates from a lineage with deep historical and royal ties. The family traces its descent to Banquo, Thane of Lochaber, immortalized in Shakespeare's Macbeth, and to the seneschals of Dol in Brittany. After the Norman conquest, they acquired English lands before migrating to Scotland under King David I, gaining extensive estates and the hereditary office of High Steward. The Royal House of Stewart emerged through a marriage with Robert the Bruce's daughter, ruling Scotland and England until Queen Anne's passing in 1714. The present Royal family maintains connections to the Stewarts, honoring their legacy. This tartan, known as the "Royal Tartan," is proudly worn by the pipers of the Scots Guards, symbolizing its royal association. Distinct branches flourished, including the Jacobite Stewarts of Appin, linked to the Appin murder in Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Kidnapped,' and the Stewarts of Atholl, known for their fighting prowess and the burning of Elgin Cathedral. The surname, Stewart or Stuart, comes from the Old English "Steward," denoting an administrative role and symbolizing nobility and leadership.
The Stewart Hunting Ancient Tartan features a vibrant interplay of blending green, red, yellow, blue, and black. The lush green evokes the majestic Scottish landscapes, while the vibrant red symbolizes the fiery spirit and courage that courses through the veins of the Stewart lineage. Accentuated by streaks of yellow, reminiscent of the golden glimmers of dawn. Splashes of deep blue contribute a sense of calm and tranquility, representing the steadfastness and wisdom that characterizes the Stewarts. Finally, black serves as a grounding element, symbolizing the strength and resilience woven into the fabric of this storied tartan.
