Historical Context
Clan Robertson, also known as Clan Donnachaidh, is one of Scotland’s oldest and most storied clans, with a history that predates many others. The clan’s origins are rooted in the leadership of Donnchadh Reamhar ("Stout Duncan"), their first recognized chief, whose lands were centered around Dunkeld in Perthshire. Loyal supporters of Robert the Bruce during the Wars of Scottish Independence, Clan Robertson played a key role in the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. The clan's name derives from Robert "Riabhach" Duncanson, the 4th Chief, who captured and delivered the murderers of King James I. In gratitude, King James II awarded the clan a crest depicting a hand upholding an imperial crown and elevated their lands into the Barony of Struan. The motto "Virtutis Gloria Merces" ("Glory is the reward of valour") embodies the clan's enduring loyalty and bravery. Despite challenges, including participation in the Jacobite risings and the eventual loss of their lands, Clan Robertson’s legacy of valor and resilience remains a proud chapter in Scottish history.
