Historical Context
The Murray clan has a rich history that dates back to the early 13th century. The clan's name originated from the region of Moray in Scotland, where they were known as Morayshire's leading family. The first recorded member of the clan was Gilchrist, who received lands from King William the Lion in 1160. The clan's prominence continued to grow, and by the 14th century, they had become one of Scotland's most powerful families. The Murray Clan's origins can be traced back to the 12th century when Flemish warlord Freskin received land from King David I in the northeast region of Scotland known as Moray. Freskin's descendants took on the surname 'de Moravia,' which eventually evolved into 'Murray.' The Murray Tartan is a contemporary interpretation of the classic tartan style.
Color Scheme and Pattern
The tartan features a predominant light forest green and gentle sky blue, separated by a thin black line. This color scheme works in perfect harmony, creating a modern yet timeless look. The colors symbolize the clan's connection to nature and the Scottish landscape. The combination of blue and green represents loyalty, courage, and the beauty of the Highlands, while the black signifies strength and resilience. Crafted from 100% acrylic wool, this tartan ensures durability and comfort, making it ideal for various Scottish attire.
Significance of the Murray Clan
The Murrays supported Robert the Bruce in his bid for Scottish independence, with their loyalty rewarded through lands and titles. Andrew Murray of Bothwell was one of the signatories of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320, a pivotal document declaring Scotland's independence from England. The Murrays held significant positions, including that of Royal Chamberlain, and the Earl of Tullibardine became the hereditary Sheriff of Perthshire. Among the clan's notable figures was Sir William Murray, who served as the Lord Chief Justice of England under King James I. Today, the Murray clan continues to be an essential part of Scotland's cultural heritage.
