The Moffats are an ancient and influential clan from the Scottish Borders, dating back to the time of William Wallace. Their name is believed to have originated from the town of Moffat, with Norse roots. Despite being without a chief for several centuries, the Moffats were a powerful Border Reiver clan with fierce rivalries, particularly with the Johnstons. Their motto, "Spero meliora" (I hope for better things), and crest, a cross crosslet fitchee rising from a crown, are emblematic of the clan. The current Clan Chief is Madam Jean Moffat of that Ilk. Bruce (Robert the Bruce) granted the Moffats land in the barony of Westerkirk in 1300, and they fought in the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. Although much of their land was lost due to debt, the Moffats bought back Craigbeck and Garrowhill, restoring their landed position. In 1983, a new chief was recognized, and a new tartan design was approved. The Moffats are now prominent sheep farmers in southern Scotland, with other branches of the family farming in Garwald, Eskdalemuir, Sundaywell, and Lochurr. The Moffats' rich history and strong connection to their Scottish Borders homeland continue to inspire and influence their legacy.
The Moffat Tartan is the official tartan of Clan Moffat, featuring the colors red, grey, and black in different stripes. It represents the clan's history and identity, with red for battle, grey for the landscape, and black for their past as Border Reivers. The tartan's design reflects the rugged terrain of the Scottish Borders, and its enduring use is a testament to the clan's legacy.
