Historical Context
The MacLean clan, tracing its roots to the ancient province of Dalriada, is steeped in Scottish history. The clan name, MacLean of Duart, originates from Gillean of the Battle-Axe, a warrior descended from Dalriada's kings, with "MacLean" meaning "Son of Gillean." The clan's ancestral lands, located along Scotland's picturesque West Coast, including the islands of Mull, Coll, Tiree, and Jura, have symbolized their legacy for centuries. Known for their fierce loyalty, the MacLeans were key players in Scotland's history, notably during the Wars of Scottish Independence alongside Robert the Bruce and the Jacobite uprisings in support of the Stuarts.
