Historical Context
The MacDonald of the Isles Hunting Weathered Tartan traces its origins to Clan Donald, established by Somerled from the Western Isles in the 12th century. Somerled, a Norseman, faced conflict with King Malcolm IV and was executed in 1164. His lineage continued to play a significant role in Scottish history; John, his descendant, became the "Lord of Isles" in 1354, supporting Robert the Bruce. The clan's notable figures include the 2nd Lord, who claimed the Earldom of Ross and fought valiantly at Harlow in 1411. By 1430, his title as Earl of Ross was officially recognized. The clan's history is marked by its turbulent relationship with the crown, notably when the title of Lord of the Isles was attached to the crown in 1494.
Color Scheme and Pattern
