Historical Context
The MacDonald of Staffa Ancient Tartan is steeped in rich history that traces back to Somerled of the Isles, the founder of Clan Donald, who expelled the Norse from the Western Isles in the 12th century. His demise in battle against King Malcolm IV in 1164 marked a significant chapter in the clan's story. In 1354, John, brother of Angus Og, who supported Robert the Bruce, became the "Lord of the Isles." The clan's legacy continued through notable events such as the Battle of Harlaw in 1411, where the second Lord defended his Earldom of Ross. The title was formally recognized in 1430 but faced challenges, ultimately being annexed to the Crown by 1494. The clan's emblem is the Meath, symbolizing their enduring strength and heritage.
Tartan Design
The MacDonald of Staffa Ancient Tartan showcases a vibrant color scheme characterized by a bright red base, which symbolizes the clan's strength and passion. Bold green and blue stripes interwoven signify the natural beauty of Scotland's landscapes. Additionally, thin white and brown lines create a detailed grid pattern, imparting a sense of balance and structure. The overall appearance of the tartan gives it a softer, weathered aesthetic, reflecting the timeless heritage of the Macdonalds.
