Historical Context
Somerled of the Isles founded Clan Donald by expelling the Norsemen from his home in the Western Isles during the 12th century. In 1164, he was executed while battling King Malcolm IV. John, brother of Angus Og who supported Robert the Bruce, assumed the title "Lord of the Isles" in 1354. The 2nd Lord claimed the Earldom of Ross and defended his claim at Harlow in 1411. His son was officially recognized as the Earl of Ross in 1430. The Lord of the Isles title was conferred in 1478 but later attached to the crown in 1494 after conflicts with the King. The MacDonald of Kingsburgh Ancient Tartan is a proud symbol of this rich heritage.
