Historical Significance
The Lauder Tartan is steeped in rich history, believed to have been created by Sir Thomas Dick Lauder, who was a close friend of the Sobieski brothers. Its origins can be traced back to the early 19th century, with the Gunn tartan serving as its almost identical precursor, first recorded in 1831. This suggests that the Sobieskis may have modified the original Gunn pattern to honor their friend, Sir Dick. The woven sample from Clans Originaux is commonly referred to as 'Gunn or Lauder,' emphasizing its closely knit heritage and connections to notable figures of the time.
Color Scheme & Pattern
The Lauder Tartan features a striking color scheme of green-black, blue, and red. The combination of these colors symbolizes strength and loyalty, often associated with the proud Scottish Highland heritage. The tartan’s pattern consists of alternating bands that create a visually appealing design, with the black bands of equal width to the blue, reflecting a balanced and harmonious aesthetic. Made from 100% acrylic wool, this tartan ensures durability and comfort for everyday wear.
