The Johnstone Ancient Tartan is deeply rooted in Scottish history, associated with the Border clan who takes their name from the Barony of Johnston in Annandale. Settling in the thirteenth century, the clan played a pivotal role in the Border conflicts, often allied with the Crown. Sir James Johnston of Johnston was elevated to Lord Johnston of Lochwood in 1633 and subsequently became the Earl of Hartfell. His lineage continued to hold prominence, with his son named Earl of Annandale in 1661. This tartan signifies not only the clan's heritage but also symbolizes a lineage of strength and nobility.
