Historical Significance
The Hepburn Ancient Tartan is steeped in rich historical significance, tracing its origins back to the legendary figure of Adam de Hepbourne, the clan's founder. According to tradition, he was once a captive of the Earl of March, who, in gratitude for being saved from a wild horse, bestowed land upon him in East Lothian. The clan's motto, "Keep Tryst," encapsulates the importance of loyalty and commitment. The Hepburn family is notably linked to the intriguing history of Mary, Queen of Scots and the infamous James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, who married the queen amid scandalous circumstances. In 1968, the distinctive sett was crafted for Captain Charles Hepburn by Anderson's of Edinburgh, based on a pre-existing pattern, further cementing its place in Scottish heritage.Â
Color Scheme & Pattern
The color scheme of the Hepburn Ancient Tartan is truly vibrant, featuring a lively orange-red background interspersed with bold lines of blue, yellow, black, and green. This combination of colors not only celebrates the tartan's traditional roots but also symbolizes warmth, vitality, and a rich connection to nature. The intricate pattern of thick and thin lines creates a dynamic visual appeal, making the tartan instantly recognizable and a powerful statement piece.Â
