Historical Significance
The history of the Fraser Clan dates back to around 1160, with the earliest recorded member being Simon Fraser, who held lands in Keith, East Lothian. The name "Fraser" likely derives from the French "de Fresel" or "de Friselle," introduced to Scotland in the 12th century. The Frasers are renowned for their steadfast loyalty to Scotland, epitomized by Simon Fraser of Lovat, who fought valiantly alongside William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, even saving Bruce’s life on three occasions. The clan’s motto, "Je Suis Prest" (I Am Ready), embodies their courage and preparedness. Throughout history, the Frasers have been deeply involved in significant conflicts, including the Jacobite risings, where they played pivotal roles. The clan is also notable for its ties to military regiments such as the Black Watch and the Lovat Scouts. The Fraser tartan, popularized in modern culture by the "Outlander" series, stands as a symbol of the clan's enduring legacy. Today, the Fraser diaspora is widespread, with significant communities in Canada and the United States. The current Chief of the clan is Fraser of Lovat, with Lady Saltoun serving as the head of the senior branch.
