Historical Significance
The Fraser Hunting Ancient Tartan is not just fabric; it's a historical document woven into a vibrant pattern that tells the tale of the Fraser clan, whose origins stretch back to the arrival of the Norman 'de Fresel' or 'de Friselle' in East Lothian, Scotland during the 12th century. This clan, synonymous with loyalty and bravery, became prominent through Simon Fraser of Lovat, who was granted lands by King Alexander III. Known for his valor, Simon Fraser fought alongside national heroes William Wallace and Robert the Bruce during the Wars of Independence, famously saving Bruce's life on three occasions. Throughout the tumultuous Wars of the Three Kingdoms, the Frasers' allegiance to the Royalist cause saw them fight in the Battle of Worcester. Their loyalty extended into the Jacobite risings of 1689 and 1745, where the clan's loyalties were split, illustrating the complex political landscape of the time. Simon Fraser, known as "the Fox," initially opposed the Jacobite cause before dramatically switching allegiances—a testament to the turbulent era. Today, the Fraser clan's extensive diaspora, particularly notable in Canada and the USA, continues to celebrate their rich heritage with Fraser of Lovat and Lady Saltoun at the helm since 1984. The tradition of naming sons Simon remains, honoring the historic Fraser who first set foot in Scotland around 1160.
