Historical Significance
The Fraser Gathering Red Ancient Tartan is a tribute to the rich history of the Fraser clan. Designed in 1997 by Polly Wittering of the Macnaughton Group and Lady Saltoun, this tartan was created specifically for the Castle Fraser Gathering held in Aberdeenshire. The Fraser clan, with both Lowland and Highland branches, has a storied past that stretches across Scotland and beyond. Originally from Anjou, France, they adopted their name from local places like Fredarius, Fresel, or Freseau. The strawberry plant featured in their coat of arms is a heraldic pun, as "fraisiers" means strawberry plants in French, symbolizing their connection to their ancestral lands. The Frasers have stood by notable figures such as William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. Simon Fraser of Lovat, a key figure, saved Bruce's life on three separate occasions, demonstrating their unwavering loyalty. During the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, they supported the Royalists but faced defeat at the Battle of Worcester. Despite setbacks, the clan’s resilience and spirit live on through their tartan.
Color Scheme & Pattern
This tartan features a captivating blend of vibrant red, deep green, and Royal blue, accented with fine white lines. The red symbolizes the strength and valor of the clan, while the green and blue reflect the lush landscapes and vast skies of Scotland. The white lines add contrast and balance to the design, making it visually appealing and meaningful. Crafted from 100% acrylic wool, this tartan offers durability and comfort, making it perfect for various occasions, from casual wear to formal events.
