Historical Context
The Cunningham clan, one of Scotland's oldest and most distinguished families, has roots tracing back to 1059 when King Malcolm III granted Malcolm, son of Friskin, the lands of Cunninghame in northern Ayrshire. By the late 13th century, the Cunninghams were firmly established in Kilmaurs. Their loyalty to the Scottish crown was evident at the Battle of Largs in 1263, where they fought for King Alexander III. As a reward, Hervy de Cunningham received a royal charter confirming their lands. Their support for Robert the Bruce earned them further estates, including Lamburgton, Finlaystone, and Glencairn. The clan's motto, "Over fork over," is believed to originate from their role as Masters of the King’s Stables.
