Clan Campbell Clan Campbell was powerful in the West of Scotland and in Argyllshire. The Clan Campbell was known for their race, the clan of Diarmid who was granted the Lordship of Lochow in the 13th century. Colin Campbell of Lochow, the ancestor of the Campbells of Argyll got knighted around 1280. Later, the chiefs were Earls Argyll as well.
In 1701 William of Orange conferred a Dukedom to the 10th Earl. The 9th Earl was executed in 1685 over his participation in the Monmouth Rebellion. The Campbells were prominently involved in state affairs and held high-ranking posts such as Lord Justice General in the family, as well as Admiral of Western Coasts and Isles of Scotland.
