Campbell Clan Origins & History
At Scottish Kilt, we are proud to present the Campbell Tartan — a bold and enduring symbol of Highland authority, loyalty, and heritage. Wearing this tartan is not just a tribute to Scottish tradition, but a connection to a powerful clan whose influence shaped Scotland’s history for centuries.
The Legendary Origins of the Campbell Clan
Clan Campbell’s origins date back to the early 13th century in Argyll, western Scotland. The name first appears with Gillespie Campbell, and the clan rose in prominence after his descendant, Cailean Mór (Great Colin), established the family around Loch Awe. Cailean’s marriage alliance brought the Lordship of Loch Awe under Campbell control. From this point on, the Campbells expanded rapidly, often at the expense of rival clans like the MacDougalls.
By the 15th century, the Campbells had become the most powerful clan in the Highlands. Their strategic loyalty to Robert the Bruce earned them royal favor, lands, and titles. Sir Duncan Campbell became Lord Campbell in 1445, and his son was later named the 1st Earl of Argyll. This marked the start of the Campbells' legacy as noble guardians of the western Highlands.
Where the Campbell Name Comes From
The name “Campbell” comes from the Gaelic “Caimbeul,” combining cam (“crooked”) and beul (“mouth”) — meaning “crooked mouth.” It began as a nickname and became one of Scotland’s most recognized surnames. Today, Campbell is one of the most common Scottish surnames globally — found from Scotland to Northern Ireland, Canada, the U.S., Australia, and Jamaica.
A Powerful Highland Clan
The Campbells grew into a dominant force through royal alliances and military service. Their chiefs were elevated to Earls, then Dukes of Argyll, becoming some of the most influential nobles in Scottish and British politics. The Campbells supported the Reformation and later the Crown during civil wars and Jacobite uprisings.
One of the most dramatic chapters in clan history was the Massacre of Glencoe in 1692, where government soldiers, including some from Clan Campbell, killed members of Clan MacDonald after accepting their hospitality. Though controversial, the act was politically motivated and remains a point of historical debate.
Throughout history, the Campbells were known for their loyalty to the government, making them both respected and feared across the Highlands.
Castles & Strongholds
The earliest Campbell stronghold was Innis Chonnell Castle on Loch Awe. As their power grew, they moved to Inveraray Castle on Loch Fyne, which became — and remains — the seat of the Dukes of Argyll.
In the Lowlands, Castle Campbell near Dollar was acquired in the 15th century and served as the clan’s eastern base. Originally called “Castle Gloom,” it was renamed after coming into Campbell hands. Today, both castles are symbols of the clan’s strategic and cultural reach.
Campbell Tartan Colors & Pattern
The Campbell tartan — famously shared with the Black Watch regiment — is a deep, dark sett featuring navy blue, green, and black in a balanced crisscross grid.
Each color reflects a key element of Campbell heritage:
-
Dark Green & Blue: Represent the forests and lochs of Argyll.
-
Black Stripes: Indicate strength, discipline, and the clan’s strong ties to government and military order.
The tartan’s subdued tones made it ideal for both battlefield and formal settings, symbolizing the clan’s authority and loyalty.
Campbell Tartan Variations
We offer multiple official Campbell tartans, each with a distinct tone and purpose:
-
Campbell Modern: Dark, vivid hues in the classic Black Watch pattern.
-
Campbell Ancient: Softer, faded tones resembling older natural dyes.
-
Campbell Weathered: Earthy browns and greys, imitating aged cloth.
-
Campbell Dress: Includes white for formal occasions and highland dancing.
-
Campbell of Breadalbane / Cawdor / Loudoun: Branch tartans with added color accents unique to each family.
-
Campbell Hunting: A muted, informal variation used for everyday wear.
Each variation honors the same proud heritage while offering a choice in expression and tradition.
Clan Symbols & Pride
Crest: A boar’s head erased Or (gold), with silver tusks and red tongue — symbolizing courage and fierceness.
Motto: Ne Obliviscaris — “Forget Not” — a call to remember one’s heritage and loyalty.
Plant Badge: Bog Myrtle (Sweet Gale) — found in Argyll’s wetlands, symbolizing protection and endurance.
War Cry: Cruachan! — after Ben Cruachan, the sacred mountain of Campbell territory.

The Campbell Clan Today
The current chief is Torquhil Ian Campbell, 13th Duke of Argyll, known formally as MacCailein MĂłr. He resides at Inveraray Castle and continues to uphold the traditions of the clan. The Campbell family participates in international events and Highland games, representing the clan worldwide.
The Clan Campbell Society is active across the U.S., Canada, Australia, and the UK, uniting members through cultural events, education, and genealogical research. National Argyle Day (January 8th) also honors the clan, as the argyle pattern was derived from the Campbell tartan when adapted into knitted hose and sweaters in the 17th century.
