Historical Context
The Campbell Ancient Tartan represents the illustrious history of Clan Campbell, a powerful lineage in the West of Scotland, particularly in Argyllshire. The clan's origins trace back to the 13th century when Diarmid was granted the Lordship of Lochow. Sir Colin Campbell of Lochow, knighted around 1280, was a pivotal figure, with his descendants eventually becoming the Earls and Dukes of Argyll. Notably, the clan played a significant role in Scottish politics, with the 9th Earl executed in 1685 for his involvement in the Monmouth Rebellion, illustrating their deep entanglement in the state's affairs. The Campbells' legacy is one of valor and prominence, marked by titles such as Lord Justice General and Admiral of the Western Coasts and Isles of Scotland.
