The Moffat Tartan has its origins in the ancient and influential Moffat clan, known for its deep roots in the Scottish Borders, tracing back to the time of William Wallace. The clan's name is derived from the town of Moffat, believed to have Norse origins. Although the clan was without a chief for centuries, it remained a powerful Border Reiver clan, particularly noted for its rivalries with the Johnstons. The clan's motto, "Spero meliora" (I hope for better things), reflects their resilient spirit. Significant historical events include their participation in the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, with lands granted by Robert the Bruce in 1300. The Moffats, now prominent sheep farmers, maintain a rich legacy and vibrant connection to their homeland.
The Moffat Tartan is the official tartan of the clan, characterized by a color scheme of red, grey, and black. The pattern features alternating stripes, where:
- Red: Represents battle and valor.
- Grey: Symbolizes the rugged landscape of the Scottish Borders.
- Black: Reflects their historical identity as Border Reivers.
Crafted from 100% acrylic wool, the Moffat Tartan offers both durability and comfort. Its design echoes the clan’s storied heritage and the natural beauty of their homeland.
