Despite the fact that it initially appears to have been the tartan of the Durisdeer and Enouch Menzies families of the South West Scottish borders, this Black and White tartan is now known as the mourning tartan. The inscription "a chief sable," which reads "a chief sable" across a white shield, is said to have inspired this.
