Historical Context
The MacBeth Ancient Tartan is steeped in rich Scottish history, with its origins traceable to the French town of Béthune. The name first appeared in Scotland around 1165, associated with Robert de Betunia, who served as a witness to a charter in East Lothian. The Gaelic derivation, MacBheathain, translates to “son of Life.” During the 16th and 17th centuries, notable families bearing the name practiced medicine in the Highlands, with their surname eventually transforming to Beaton. The Bethunes of Balfour notably owned Bandon Tower, adding to the family's legacy. This tartan symbolizes a connection to tradition and heritage, making it suitable for various events and occasions.
