Mulcahy Tartan

Mulcahy is a surname that has deep roots in Irish Gaelic culture and history. Its origin can be traced back to the Gaelic phrase "Ó Maolchatha", meaning 'a descendant of a devotee of Cathach', a personal name which connotes strength and bravery. This family is believed to have originated in Tipperary County, but their presence was first recorded in the Annals of Inisfallen in 1317 AD, where a member of the sept named Giolla Moenaig Ó Maolchatha was mentioned as the "Keeper of the Island". Despite being largely absent in medieval annalistic records, Edward MacLysaght, the foremost authority on Irish surnames, noted that this family had developed a political hold on the offices of various churches in County Kerry during the 15th century. It is even more remarkable that these offices were held by the family without them having been ordained as priests. Benefices were granted by papal decree to a number of the sept, including the Vicarages of Killarney, Ardfert, and Aghadoe, which were held within the sept for several generations. This would support the notion that the Uí Mhaolchatha of Co. Kerry had developed into a modest ecclesiastical dynasty, further highlighting the significant role played by this family in the religious and political landscape of Ireland during the medieval period.
