Longniddry Tartan - Dress Dance Green

Longniddry, a picturesque coastal town in East Lothian, Scotland, boasts a rich history that intertwines with notable families and significant historical events. The town's coastline, adorned with dunes known as Longniddry Bents, has seen centuries of human habitation, with early evidence dating back thousands of years. Initially called "Nedderrie" in Old English, Longniddry was under the control of the influential Seton family from the 12th century, marking its regional significance. The Douglas family, particularly Hugh Douglas, played a pivotal role in the town's history. Hugh Douglas, who sided with the English during the Rough Wooing, was an early promoter of Reformed doctrines and had ties with John Knox, a notable Scottish Reformer who tutored Hugh's sons. The destruction of Longniddry Castle in 1548, due to political reasons, led to its rubble being used to build Redhouse Castle. Francis Douglas, Hugh's son, was later involved in the succession to the Earldom of Morton, further cementing the Douglas family's historical footprint in the region. Throughout its history, Longniddry witnessed significant events, including the Wars of Scottish Independence and the Jacobite rebellions. In 1650, Sir George Douglas sold the town to the Earl of Winton. Though the ruins of Longniddry Castle were visible until the mid-19th century, they have now completely vanished, leaving behind a thriving community that cherishes its cultural heritage. The Longniddry Tartan, created in the mid-20th century by a local weaver, draws inspiration from the area's natural beauty and rich cultural past.
