Duncan Tartan

The Duncan Tartan holds a rich historical legacy deeply rooted in Scottish heritage. The name Duncan, originating from the Gaelic form Donnchadh, can be traced back to Scotland's oldest records. Its appearance in the Book of Deer in 1150 showcased Duncan as the leader of Clan Morgan, indicating widespread usage of the name throughout Scotland during that period. While in the early fourteenth century, Duncan became associated with the Clan Robertsons as a sept name, it's important to note that not all Duncans were affiliated with this clan. One prominent lineage associated with the name Duncan is the Duncans of Lundie, who held extensive property including the Barony of Lundie and the estate of Gourdie in the East of Scotland. Among the notable figures, Sir William Duncan, the physician to George III, was granted the title of the first and last Baronet in 1764. Furthermore, Adam Duncan of Lundie achieved great naval victories and was bestowed the title of the First Viscount Duncan of Camperdown in 1797. With strong ties to Aberdeenshire, Dundee & Angus, and Fife, the Duncan name has a prominent presence in these regions. The clan's tartan, known as 'Leslie of Wardis,' has historical significance and was even utilized by the King's Own Scottish Borderers regiment. It's important to recognize that the Duncan clan's origins can be traced back to the ancient Earls of Atholl, and their esteemed chief, Donnachadh Reanhar, also known as "Fat Duncan," led the clan valiantly at the Battle of Bannockburn.
The Duncan Tartan proudly displays a vibrant combination of colors, featuring shades of green, blue, red, and white. These hues beautifully intertwine, forming a captivating sett pattern that pays homage to the rich Scottish tradition. The greens symbolize the breathtaking landscapes and lush fields, while the blues evoke the depths of the surrounding lochs and seas. The striking red signifies the unwavering courage and resilience of the Duncan clan.
